The Importance of the Mixing Ratio in Two-Component Systems

Regardless of whether it is a primer filler, transparent lacquer or any other two-component system, the prescribed mixing ratios must always be consistently complied with when preparing the material.
Two-component systems consist of a component A (lacquer, primer filler, putty for spade, epoxy coating, etc.) and a component B (hardener). The figure below is a schematic representation of a two-component polyurethane system and the reaction between the functional groups of the two components, namely the crosslinking reaction.

Be aware that dosing larger amounts of hardener in a two-component system does not cause faster drying and does not improve the final result. A lack or excess of the hardener can at worst have negative consequences as some of the material (either component A or B) remains un-reacted.

The mixing ratios of the manufacturers are prescribed in order to meet the need for adequate crosslinking of the two-component system, namely the reaction of each individual functional group.

The calculated and determined mixing ratio is usually based on 100-110% crosslinking of hardener and component A.

It should also be borne in mind that the exact prescribed hardener should always be used, since the content of active components (isocyanate concentration) varies from hardener to hardener.
